M y family is having a discussion about the ongoing protests in the US, and with Drew Brees dragging the anthem controversy back into the spotlight, discussion has turned to that as well. But this is not a post about that. My question is: Do other countries play their national anthem before every single sporting event, from pee wee T-ball up through professional sports? Or are we the only ones?

Canada does the national anthem at major sporting events, but not little league stuff.
We also played the national anthem every morning when I was in school. Probably still going on.

That moment you remember the US is patriotic to its core.

Here in TX, they do the Pledge of Allegiance and the Pledge of Allegiance to the Texas Flag, which is kind of creepy.

Your national anthem also has explosions, blood, and war in it, so realistically, it’s not much of a surprise.

National anthems are played here for international sporting events and for some major national ones. Otherwise, no.
There was a time when the anthem was played before television shut down for the night, but those days are long gone.

I remember in grade school starting to ask questions of my teacher about the pledge. She couldn’t tell me why the pledge said “republic” when we were a democracy.
Having kids pledge allegiance blindly, using words even their teachers may not understand, ain’t patriotism. But I’ll stop my rant t here because what’s the point?

Yeah Canada certainly doesn’t. I’m not a sports guy but I’ve never heard it played outside of a Stadium/School. Although the stadium national anthem was before a provincial league hockey game (one below NHL).
Also this:

Outside of the most major events, I believe we’re one of the few that do. I’d have to dig around to find some peer reviewer sources, but as I generally recall the anthem being a thing at sporting events and gatherings here is a relatively recent thing in our history. Before WW2, it was generally only commonly played on patriotic holidays and occasions. I recall something about the first time being known to have been played at a sporting event was during WW1. It became a thing that that really started during WW2 as part of the effort to stoke patriotism in support of rationing and folks buying war bonds. For some reason, it stuck around after.
S
ometimes being a history major comes in handy.

That was done in some US TV markets as well , and not just in the earliest days of broadcasting. I remember it in the ‘70s, before every channel was 24-7.

Also on the subject, I wonder how many folks know there are three more verses of the song. In the spirit of no half measures, if we’re going to it I’ve always we thought we ought to do the whole thing.
Somewhat ironically, I imagine the folks that are probably the biggest into doing the anthem and most bothered by protests during it also don’t know about the unofficial fifth verse that became a popular addition during the civil war and aftermath that starts of f with “down, down with the traitor from within...”

If it weren’t for hockey we wouldn’t know the Canadian national anthem. We’d be singing:
Oh Canada
You’re to the north of us
And we are to the south of you
But north of Mexico.
Oh Canada.
Your beaches are.....not warm
La da da dee dee da da daaaa
And north of Mexico

It’s a song about flag in an obscure battle in a mostly forgotten war. It says nothing about the country itself, its ideals, its virtues, its resources. I’d much rather have “My Country Tis Of Thee” for the anthem. Not does it tick most of those boxes, it’s just better music.

Massive spit take on this! Lived in Montreal for 5 years and being originally from California, that is about the lyrics I sang at sporting events.

National anthems
Br itish, God Save the Queen ,
Scottish, Flower of Scotland or Scotland the Brave ,
Northern Irish, God Save the Queen, Londonderry Air,
Welsh, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau* /Old Land of my Fathers,
and
English, Jerusalem for cricket, Land of Hope and Glory at most others if not using God Save the Queen )
are played at large national and international events.
But it’s pretty much America and dictatorships that have such a fondness for pledges of allegiance, anthems and displays of the flag** .
If you want to sing the Welsh one, go for it.
Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mâd,
Tros ryddid gollasant eu gwaed.
Gwlad, Gwlad, pleidiol wyf i’m gwlad,
Tra môr yn fur i’r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i’r heniaith barhau.
Hen Gymru fynyddig, paradwys y bardd,
Pob dyffryn, pob clogwyn, i’m golwg sydd hardd;
Trwy deimlad gwladgarol, mor swynol yw si
Ei nentydd, afonydd, i mi.
Gwlad, Gwlad, pleidiol wyf i’m gwlad,
Tra môr yn fur i’r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i’r heniaith barhau.
Os treisiodd y gelyn fy ngwlad dan ei droed,
Mae hen iaith y Cymry mor fyw ag erioed,
Ni luddiwyd yr awen gan erchyll law brad,
Na thelyn berseiniol fy ngwlad.
Gwlad, Gwlad, pleidiol wyf i’m gwlad,
Tra môr yn fur i’r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i’r heniaith barhau
** Except during the World Cup or Olympics.

My problem with that is that the melody is extremely common, used by anthems and patriotic songs in numerous countries, and by several different Christian hymns, so its unrecognizable when played purely instrumentally. The original song on which the Star Spangled Banner is based has been entirely forgotten, along with all the other popular songs that shared its melody in the 18th and 19th centuries, so that it has now become distinctive.
Hail, Columbia was a good one. But, modern people woul be confused by “Columbia” being an early romantic Latin nick name for the United States, before the modern nation of Columbia was founded, and also we’d have to figure out a new official song for the vice president if that became our anthem.

I think it’s interesting how much of Cohen’s stuff is deep political/social commentary, and how incredibly dedicated he has to be not only to his characters, but the secrecy involved in getting genuine responses from people. And yet most people remember him for (albeit hilarious) one liners from Borat.

I’m still operating under the assumption that in the final days before his term ends, the president is going to change the national anthem from The Star-Spangled Banner to a Kid Rock song. Probably Bawitdaba..

I think that’s a Texas thing. My kids do baseball/softball/track/cross country, and in 3 years, I've only come across the anthem once. Otherwise it's only at pro level sports.

As you go into the other verses of the poem, there’ s enough about indentured servants, slaves, blood and conquest to be troublesome. Considering it wasn't actually even officially adopted as the national anthem until 1916, we should probably rethink it at some point...

I think that one of the most noteworthy pieces of news of late is the NFL coming out and saying they were wrong about Kaepernik kneeling. Of course, that means that NASCAR will come out and say the all lives matter or something and we’ll have deeper division. If my daughters are any barometer at all of the progressive mindset these days, those folks have zero sympathy for the police or the looting victims. Also, the first crack in the dyke for Zuckerberg...

The U.S. is both a democracy and a republic .
Pledging allegiance really looks/sounds like indoctrination or brainwashing (its the same term that is used by... ISIS and Al Quaida) and playing the national anthem makes only sense for international events .

The reason I don’t have an Advanced Degree in Something Important is because my brain is clogged with jingles from the 80’s, old phone numbers and movie quotes.
